At Martin Dentistry, Dr. Matt Martin, Dr. Stephanie Martin, Dr. Lindsey Garrison, and Dr. Lynn Marshall are committed to helping our patients understand the importance of dental health, including how to prevent and treat cavities. Cavities are one of the most common dental problems, yet many people don’t fully understand what they are and why treating them is so important. In this blog, we’ll explain what a cavity is, the pros and cons of repairing cavities, and the treatment options available.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity is a small hole in the tooth that occurs when tooth enamel is damaged by acid-producing bacteria. The bacteria feed on sugars and starches left on your teeth after eating and drinking, producing acids that gradually wear away the enamel. Over time, if left untreated, the cavity can grow and penetrate deeper into the tooth, causing pain, infection, and possibly tooth loss.

Pros and Cons of Repairing Cavities

Pros of Repairing Cavities:

  • Prevents Further Damage: Repairing a cavity early can stop decay from spreading deeper into the tooth, preventing more serious issues such as root infections or tooth loss.
  • Relieves Pain: Cavities can cause tooth sensitivity and pain, especially as they grow larger. Repairing the cavity alleviates discomfort and protects the tooth from further damage.
  • Maintains Oral Health: Treating cavities as soon as they’re detected helps maintain the overall health of your mouth, preventing the need for more invasive treatments in the future.
  • Improves Aesthetics: Repairing a cavity can restore the tooth’s appearance, especially if tooth-colored fillings are used. This ensures your smile looks healthy and natural.

Cons of Not Repairing Cavities:

  • Increased Damage: If a cavity is left untreated, it can grow larger and deeper, eventually affecting the tooth’s root or leading to tooth loss.
  • Infection Risks: Deep cavities can lead to infections inside the tooth, which may require a root canal or extraction if left untreated.
  • Higher Costs: The longer a cavity goes untreated, the more extensive (and expensive) the required treatment becomes. Early intervention is more affordable and less invasive.

Treatment Options for Cavities

At Martin Dentistry, Dr. Matt Martin, Dr. Stephanie Martin, Dr. Lindsey Garrison, and Dr. Lynn Marshall offer a variety of effective treatments for cavities, depending on the severity of the decay.

Dental Fillings: For most cavities, a filling is the go-to treatment. During the procedure, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the area is filled with a material such as composite resin (tooth-colored), amalgam (silver), or porcelain. Composite resin fillings are popular for their natural appearance and strength.

Inlays and Onlays: For larger cavities that don’t require a full crown, inlays and onlays may be used. These are custom-made fillings that fit into the cavity like a puzzle piece and are bonded to the tooth, offering a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution.

Dental Crowns: If a cavity is too large for a filling but the tooth can still be saved, a dental crown may be necessary. A crown covers the entire tooth, protecting it from further damage and restoring its shape, function, and appearance.

Root Canal Therapy: When the decay has reached the inner pulp of the tooth, a root canal may be required. This treatment involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent future infection. A crown is often placed on top of the tooth after a root canal for added protection.

Tooth Extraction: In cases where a cavity has caused extensive damage that cannot be repaired, the tooth may need to be extracted. After an extraction, tooth replacement options like dental implants or bridges can restore your smile.

Preventing Cavities

  • Preventing cavities is always better than treating them. The best way to prevent cavities is by practicing good oral hygiene habits:
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
  • Limit sugary snacks and beverages, as they feed cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Visit Martin Dentistry regularly for professional cleanings and checkups.
