Sleep Apnea Treatment in Indianapolis, IN and Fishers, IN

Tired of Snoring, Fatigue, or Poor Sleep?

If you wake up exhausted, struggle with loud snoring, or feel tired throughout the day, sleep apnea may be affecting your health and quality of life. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that causes interruptions in breathing while you sleep due to airway blockage.

Many people living with sleep apnea in Indianapolis and Fishers are unaware they stop breathing multiple times throughout the night. These repeated pauses in airflow can reduce oxygen levels, disrupt sleep cycles, and contribute to serious long-term health concerns.

At Martin Dentistry, we provide customized sleep apnea treatment options designed to help patients breathe more comfortably, sleep more deeply, and improve overall wellness through non-invasive dental sleep medicine solutions.

What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax excessively during sleep, narrowing or blocking the airway. This causes repeated interruptions in breathing that may last several seconds at a time. Common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud or chronic snoring
  • Waking up gasping for air
  • Morning headaches
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dry mouth upon waking
  • Restless sleep
  • Irritability or mood changes

Even mild sleep apnea can significantly affect your energy levels, cardiovascular health, and daily performance.

Comfortable Alternatives to CPAP Therapy

While CPAP machines are commonly prescribed for sleep apnea treatment, many patients find them difficult to tolerate due to bulky masks, machine noise, or discomfort during sleep. Martin Dentistry offers oral appliance therapy as a comfortable alternative for many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea in Indianapolis and Fishers, IN. Dental sleep medicine focuses on improving airflow naturally while you sleep using custom-designed oral appliances that are discreet, portable, and easy to wear.

Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea in Indianapolis, IN

Oral appliance therapy uses a custom-fitted dental device that gently repositions the jaw and tongue to help keep the airway open throughout the night. Patients often choose oral appliance therapy because it is:

  • Comfortable and custom-made
  • Quiet and travel-friendly
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Non-invasive and convenient
  • An effective CPAP alternative for many patients

Many individuals notice improvements in snoring, sleep quality, daytime energy, and overall restfulness after beginning treatment.

Why Treating Sleep Apnea Is Important

Sleep apnea is more than a nighttime inconvenience. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea can increase the risk of several serious health conditions, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Memory and concentration problems

Proper diagnosis and treatment can help improve sleep quality, support long-term health, and reduce many of the symptoms associated with sleep-disordered breathing.

Personalized Sleep Apnea Care

During your consultation at Martin Dentistry, we will review your symptoms, medical history, airway health, and sleep study results to determine if oral appliance therapy is the right solution for you. We may also work alongside your physician or sleep specialist to ensure coordinated care and comprehensive treatment planning. Our goal is to provide personalized sleep apnea treatment for patients throughout Indianapolis, Fishers, and surrounding communities in a comfortable dental setting.

Tabitha did a very thorough job of cleaning my teeth. She suggested that I might consider using an electric tooth brush. She was willing in at the office all day. She was a very nice lady!

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax excessively during sleep, narrowing or blocking the airway. The signs we hear most often are loud or chronic snoring, waking up gasping for air, morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, restless sleep, and mood changes.

Many patients are told about the snoring by a partner long before they suspect anything themselves. If several of these sound familiar, our sleep apnea self-screening uses the STOP-BANG questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to help identify whether further testing makes sense.

Can a dentist diagnose sleep apnea?

No, and any dental practice that says otherwise is overstating things. A sleep study is required to diagnose and determine the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, and that diagnosis comes from a physician or sleep specialist. What a dentist can do is a screening.

At Martin Dentistry, we use validated screening questionnaires, evaluate your airway and oral structures, and help you understand whether testing is warranted. If you are diagnosed, we work alongside your physician or sleep specialist, so your care is coordinated rather than fragmented.

Is an oral appliance really an alternative to CPAP?

For many patients, yes. CPAP is highly effective, but a substantial number of people find it difficult to tolerate because of bulky masks, machine noise, or general discomfort during sleep. Oral appliance therapy is a recognized alternative that is most often recommended for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for patients with more severe apnea who genuinely cannot tolerate CPAP. The right answer depends on your diagnosis and severity, which is why we coordinate with your physician or sleep specialist rather than making that call alone.

Who is a good candidate for oral appliance therapy?

Generally, adults who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, patients who have tried CPAP and could not stick with it, and people whose primary complaint is heavy snoring. Good candidates also need enough healthy teeth to anchor the appliance and reasonably stable jaw joints, so we evaluate your bite, your teeth, and your temporomandibular joints before recommending it.

Does insurance cover a sleep apnea oral appliance?

Since obstructive sleep apnea is a medical condition rather than a dental one, oral appliance therapy is generally handled through medical insurance, not your dental plan, and coverage usually requires a documented diagnosis from a sleep study along with clinical notes.

That is a different billing pathway than a filling or a crown, so ask our team early, and we will explain how your specific situation works before you commit to anything. HSA and FSA funds typically apply as well. Call our Indianapolis office or Fishers to talk it through.

How long does it take to get a sleep apnea oral appliance?

Plan on a few weeks. The sequence is a consultation and screening, then a sleep study and diagnosis if you don’t already have one, then digital impressions or scans of your teeth, fabrication of your custom appliance, then a fitting appointment.

After that come short follow-up visits to calibrate the device, because small adjustments to how far the jaw is positioned forward make a real difference in both effectiveness and comfort.

What happens if sleep apnea goes untreated?

The consequences reach well past feeling tired. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea is associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, along with chronic fatigue and problems with memory and concentration.

The mechanism is repeated drops in oxygen and repeated arousals from deep sleep, night after night, which strain the cardiovascular system and prevent genuinely restorative rest. Daytime drowsiness also raises the risk behind the wheel. This is why we encourage screening rather than waiting.
