Why Do I Need a Deep Cleaning? (And Why It Really Matters)

If you’ve recently visited the dentist and were told you need a "deep cleaning" instead of a regular cleaning, you might be wondering what the difference is and whether it's actually necessary.

It is completely normal to have questions! While a routine checkup cleans the surfaces of your teeth above the gumline, a deep cleaning (known clinically as Scaling and Root Planing, or SRP) is a specialized therapeutic treatment designed to stop active gum infection and protect the foundation of your smile.

At Martin Dentistry, our team, Dr. Matthew Martin, Dr. Stephanie Martin, Dr. Kyle Meding, and Dr. Lindsey Garrison believes in empowering our patients with clear information. Here is a breakdown of why a deep cleaning is recommended, how Scaling and Root Planing works, and why taking action matters for your long-term health.

The Difference Between a Regular Cleaning and a Deep Cleaning

To understand why you might need a deep cleaning, it helps to look at what each procedure accomplishes:

  • Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis): Designed for healthy gums or mild surface buildup. Your hygienist cleans the visible parts of your teeth down to the gumline to prevent cavities and maintain existing oral health.
  • Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): Designed to treat periodontitis (gum disease). When plaque and tartar creep below the gumline, they create hidden "pockets" that a toothbrush, floss, or standard cleaning tool simply cannot reach.

What Is SRP? (Scaling and Root Planing Explained)

Scaling and Root Planing is a two-step, non-surgical treatment that cleans deep below the gumline and helps your body heal from infection.

Step 1: Scaling

Using specialized sonic and hand instruments, your hygienist carefully removes hardened tartar (calculus), sticky plaque, and bacterial toxins from the surfaces of your teeth and beneath your gums all the way down to the bottom of the infected pockets.

Step 2: Root Planing

Once the tartar is removed, the rough surfaces on the roots of your teeth are smoothed out (planed). Bacteria thrive on rough surfaces, so smoothing the roots makes it much harder for plaque to stick in the future. More importantly, smooth root surfaces allow your gum tissue to reattach tightly to your teeth as it heals.

Why Getting a Deep Cleaning Matters

When tartar sits below the gumline, it triggers chronic inflammation. Over time, your body’s immune system tries to fight off the bacteria, which causes the surrounding bone and tissue holding your teeth in place to slowly recede.

Ignoring the need for an SRP treatment can lead to:

  • Deepening Gum Pockets: Infection spreads deeper into the jaw.
  • Bone Loss: The supportive bone around your teeth breaks down.
  • Loose or Shifting Teeth: As bone support shrinks, teeth can become unstable.
  • Systemic Health Risks: Oral bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream, contributing to heart disease, diabetes complications, and systemic inflammation.

By getting a deep cleaning early, you can halt the progression of gum disease, eliminate chronic bleeding and bad breath, and protect your natural teeth for a lifetime.

Does a Deep Cleaning Hurt?

Your comfort is our top priority! Before beginning an SRP procedure, we thoroughly numb the area so you won't feel pain during the treatment.

After the appointment, your gums may feel slightly tender or sensitive for a few days as the tissue heals, but this is easily managed with mild over-the-counter pain relievers and saltwater rinses. Most patients find the recovery quick and straightforward.

Office was very clean. Staff were friendly. The hygienist was excellent, got me promptly from waiting room, did a great job with my cleaning. Dr. Martin was fantastic. Left with a treatment plan. I don't enjoy going to the dentist, but this was by far one of the best visits I've had.
