What Can I Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment?
A professional teeth cleaning is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain a healthy smile and prevent dental issues. At Martin Dentistry, our team, including Dr. Matt Martin, Dr. Stephanie Martin, Dr. Lindsey Garrison, and Dr. Lynn Marshall, wants you to feel comfortable and informed during your visit. If you’re wondering what happens during a teeth cleaning appointment, here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect.
1. Dental Examination
Your teeth cleaning will usually begin with a quick examination. One of our experienced dental hygienists will take a look inside your mouth to assess the health of your teeth and gums. Using a small mirror, they’ll check for any signs of cavities, gum inflammation, or other concerns. If anything needs further attention, they’ll consult with the dentist before proceeding.
2. Plaque and Tartar Removal
The next step involves removing plaque and tartar buildup. Using a specialized tool called a scaler, the hygienist will carefully scrape away plaque and tartar that have accumulated around your gumline and between your teeth. Tartar is hardened plaque that can only be removed with professional tools, so regular cleanings are key to keeping your smile healthy.
Does it hurt?
While this step may feel a little strange, it’s generally not painful. If you have sensitive teeth, let your hygienist know, and they’ll make adjustments to keep you comfortable.
3. Polishing Your Teeth
After plaque and tartar have been removed, the hygienist will polish your teeth using a high-powered electric brush and a gritty toothpaste. This helps clean away any remaining plaque and surface stains, leaving your teeth feeling smooth and shiny. The polishing process is safe and gentle but very effective at removing minor discoloration.
4. Professional Flossing
Even if you floss regularly at home, professional flossing during your cleaning ensures no debris or plaque is left behind. The hygienist will expertly clean between your teeth and reach areas that are often missed during daily flossing. This step also helps identify any spots where your gums may bleed, which could indicate gum sensitivity or early gum disease.
5. Rinsing
You’ll be given a rinse to clear away any leftover debris from the cleaning and polishing process. This step leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean!
6. Fluoride Treatment (Optional)
Many patients opt for a fluoride treatment to strengthen their enamel and protect against cavities. Fluoride is applied as a gel, foam, or varnish that sits on your teeth for a short time. This step is especially beneficial for children or adults at higher risk for tooth decay.
7. Final Check-Up with the Dentist
Once the cleaning is complete, one of our dentists will perform a final check-up. They’ll review your x-rays (if taken), examine your teeth and gums, and discuss any concerns or recommendations for future care. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about your oral health and address any specific needs you may have.
Why Regular Cleanings Matter
Regular dental cleanings every six months are vital for preventing gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues. Even with great brushing and flossing habits at home, plaque and tartar can still build up over time. Professional cleanings not only protect your teeth but also give us the opportunity to catch and treat problems early.
